Mew, and a few other Vocaloids all fell into this category and its kinda harsh to say things like that. Either is fine, the trouble is there are better Vocaloids. Kokone is more of a tool vocaloid for XSY in V4, able to give falsetto to other vocaloids so I consider her semi-essential. Unain V4 as ranked as one of the easily high quality vocals and is usually recommended over Kokone, but if you own V4 and Kokone the two vocalists as as good as Internet got. Kokone is actually one of the better vocals but she is again difficult to balance.

Considering these 3 were professional level vocalists, and made for professionals, consider them like owning 3 lite vocals like Sachiko or Prima. I've seen too many Westerners in particular who don't realize how shallow their range is already used them and a song ends up not being great (or they use the wrong vocal). While they can solo, there are so many better Vocaloids that do solo, and Zola is always best as a trio or back up to other Vocaloids. Zola project is a nice vocal, but be are their vocals are quite shallow as the 3 vocals are meant to cover each other. The best thing about her as Vociceroid and a lot of the time if you went after her it was always best to chase the voiceroid too, it was similar with Yuzuki and the Voiceroids being more useful then their Vocaloid counterparts see several times more usage. Thats it (actually this as a VERY common problem in V3/V4, a lot of good vocals were just good vocals).
Zunko suffers from similar problems to Merli and Mayu, its just a nice vocal. Otherwise I'll comment on the other vocal recommendations. In terms of voice, from what I gather most just preferred dark sounding voices of Meiko or Miku ho had more money for the buck. Japan loves its protagonists and Lapis as the protagonist, while Merli as the antagonist of the two and Vocaloids only 'hero' and 'Villian' duo. The lack of coverage resulted in there not being much to say about her vocal overall. A lot of people preferred other Vocaloids and thus she lost usage.
In regards to Merli, the main issue is that her vocal is great but. She can sound a bit same-Y which is where the V3 era problem lays. Mayu's main thing is she only sound unique while you go out and down the octaves, as her behaviour as a vocalist is unique for a V3. This is actually a LOT of V3s problems due to the old recording style holding back Japanese Vocaloids. Mayu's min problem is while she has unique traits for a V3 (its V3, this era is plagued by vocals not standing out), there are plenty of vocals that are alternatives to her. This is the biggest issue here, you have not listed what you own, so nobody can make a recommendation. Without knowing that you've got no one can recommend alternative vocals to Mayu or Merli. Now that's out of the way, I can move onto the meat of my own response. This is just something I always say because people have this delusion about Vocaloid. I don't know why you've reduced things down to Japanese ones only, I only hope you can use them and just be aware English, Spanish, Chinese and Korean Vocaloids do not have any difference in quality. V3 is now a semi-expensive era of voicebanks for some vocals, but most are not effected if you're looking at digital.
